Possible To Make Working Supercharger From A Leafblower Or Something Similar?

So I've seen alot of bogus plans for making a supercharger out of stuff like a bilge pump, I know that those are a hoax. However I was looking through a tool catalog and saw a dust collector, and the motor to it looked alot like a turbocharger turbine. The specs said it pumps out about 923cfm, so it got me wondering, would it actually be feasable to put a high flow filter on it and hook it up to the intake of a car, and power it by a power inverter? I've also got a powerful shop vac with detachable blower, I don't know the cfm, but its rated at 265mph wind, it seems like that would pump alot more air through the engine. Are these things possible?

  1. This is a common idea – unfortunately, it doesn’t work very well. It may make a little more power, but not enough to justify the effort and expense of fitting it. The blower may be able to push 923 cfm, but it doesn’t have the power to pressurize that air. This is why superchargers use so much of the engine’s initial power just to operate themselves. I have heard of purpose-built electric superchargers, but they don’t seem to be all that popular – which should tell you something. This is why they usually run directly from the crankshaft pulley – or the exhaust manifold.
    PS: I have a blower with a 120 mph nozzle air speed – and I can block it completely with my hand. The internal tolerances are too great, so the turbine stops pumping and just spins at that point, but without any great effect.

  2. anything is possible if you are a good automotive engineer. Best to leave the experimenting to the experts for safety sake.

  3. A guy I went to school with had hooked a leaf blower and invertor to a friends car. They had no way to compensate for the extra air so they just turned the carb rich. The blower was hooked to a switch that they could turn on going down the road. It was terribly inefficient but did make extra power. They didn’t put a fuse on it and the owner forgot to turn it off one day and the car caught fire in the high school parking lot.
    It would be possible to damage things running the engine either way rich when the blower is off or too lean when it is on.
